Record number of project applications received in the 2023 round of the European Defence Fund

  • The EU defence industry, SMEs and research institutions submitted a record number of project applications. These 236 applications will compete for the total funding available - EUR 1.2 billion. This is the highest number of proposals received since the fund's inception in 2021 and is an overall 76% increase over the previous year.

The European Commission services will start checking the adequacy of the proposals received. The Commission, with the assistance of independent external experts, will then assess their scientific excellence and other award criteria, as well as carry out an ethics review of all projects. The results of the evaluation are expected to be announced by the end of the second quarter of 2024.
